Compound Interest: Problem Solving Starts with Engagement

This is the second of a two-aspect series on the legacy of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.

When I was in 10th quality, biology was my least beloved issue. We expended a lot of time memorizing a bunch of meaningless words—variables, induce and outcome, micro organism. What is the fun in that?

I vividly remember the instant my thoughts changed. My instructor began the course with a concern: “Nearly 200 many years back, far more gals died in childbirth in hospitals than when toddlers were delivered at home—why do you believe that was happening?”

Today, as I support my grandson scrub his hands with cleaning soap and drinking water, I’m flooded with that memory of staying motivated by wanting to know why. How do we get kids to expertise what Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls circulation, that emotion of currently being so associated in a endeavor that time flies by?

For all learners, it’s tricky to master when the issues staying questioned are not personally meaningful. Biology started off to turn out to be a lot more fascinating for me, for case in point, simply because the course discussion was about mothers.

In my investigate, I have observed that when pupils really feel engaged in science class—experiencing high ranges of desire, obstacle, and skill—they are much more possible to report that science is critical to them and their futures. If parents and instructors want children to go after hard assignments that increase discovery and creativeness, we need to design meaningful difficulties that kids really don’t know the respond to to but have the capacity to obtain out.

Don’t suppose that young ones battling with a homework assignment are lazy.

Do encourage young people today to check out issues that make any difference to them.
